CSD Kisumu exists to champion Peace building by promoting efforts that empower the youth community with focus on capacity building in food security, health, human rights, education, environment and advocacy for multi-sectoral approaches to youths/women socio-economic development.

About

Community Support for Development in Kisumu (CSD Kisumu) is women and youth led Community Based Organization (CBO) registered with the Ministry of Gender and Social Development – Kenya, Kisumu Central Constituency. It is a non-political, non-discriminatory and non religious civil society organization (CSO) formed by youth and women sections of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of 2007/2008 post-election violence in Kenya who were rescued and taken to a camp in Kisumu.

CSD Kisumu therefore engages youths and women in raises awareness on key peace building (political and resource based conflicts), advocacy, education, governance, livelihood and cohesion concerns. We have 4 programmes of Governance, Peace & Advocacy; Women; Trainings & Capacity building for youths and Education. We also do capacity building trainings and support to other smaller women and youth groups, peace committees and county government departments, support education through sponsoring needy cases, clean and safe water in schools, feeding in schools and extending support to the parents to cushion school drop outs among the child headed households. We are supporting Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) as well.

BENEFICIARIES:

CSD Kisumu mainly targets youth and women prone to conflict: Youths, Orphans, vulnerable children, adolescents, persons with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS and entire community populace with needs in line with our set programmes.

Success Stories

  • In the year 2010, we successfully rolled a 6 months “Kanyawegi reconciliation dialogue” under the PROMOTION OF NATIONAL COHESION AND RECONCILIATION IN KENYA with the support of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Kenya, Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) and Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR).
  • In 2010, we rolled out women dialogue project duded “Duond Mine” (women voices) for 3 months under the support of The National Steering Committee on Peace Building (NSC) Kenya.
  • Between 2013 and 2017, we rolled a 5 year project – “Consolidating the peace processes and establishing foundations for successful devolution while engaging women in Kisumu” supported by UNDP and DANIDA under the facilitation of Centre for Governance and Development (CGD).
  • In 2016, we rolled out “Voices of concern” under the support of Urgent Action Fund – Africa, Niwano Peace Foundation and local partners.
  • From July 2017 - 2018 rolled out policy campaign on the Kisumu County Housing Policy which has attracted support from Urgent Action Fund – Africa, the Asian Community and capacity building from CGD.
  • Currently (2019 – 2020), we are getting support from UNDP Kenya (Amkeni Wakenya) on sufficient budget campaigns towards free maternity in Kisumu County.
  • Our other sister programmee (Women issues and educations) have also received support mainly from the Kisumu County Government, local community and business associations, school managements and the contribution from our staffs and the board of management. This has seen success in these interventions as we have active feeding programs in 3 local schools, 16 women are in school and the host communities are supported with farming inputs.
